It has been learned that in order to distribute important certificates and identification cards such as temporary passports and foreign worker identification cards for Myanmar workers in Thailand, the Overseas Worker Migration Committee will go and open offices in five Thai cities starting this coming January 7th.

The chairperson of the the Overseas Worker Migration Committee and union minister U Aung Kyi stated in a meeting held by a senior committee in Naypyidaw on December 6th that starting January 7th, 2012 five offices will be opened in Chiang Mai, Mahachai, Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Surat Thani to provide temporary passports and foreign worker registration cards and citizenship verification for Myanmar workers in Thailand, and identification cards for their children.

Thailand is the country where the most Myanmar workers have gone. Due to the worst flood in 50 years in the whole of Thailand during last October and November, some Myanmar workers in Thailand returned home while most workers could not enter their workplaces and had many difficulties. In Thailand, there are about 4 million Myanmar workers and there are about 1 million who are working with legal registration cards said a person doing Myanmar workers issues in Thailand. In Myanmar there is a work force of 30.96 million and there are about 3 million working in foreign countries said U Aung Kyi. However, there are over 500,090 workers who have legally gone to all foreign countries combined, said a person with duties in the Department of Labour.
