Unemployment in Myanmar

The annual unemployment rate in Myanmar increased by over one million

Unemployment in Myanmar, which has a population about 60 million, increased by over one million people in one year, said Deputy Minister Myint Thein of the Ministry of Labour.

"The population in increasing 1.1 per cent annually. The annual increase in unemployment was over one million," said the deputy minister.

In Myanmar, according to the statistics of 2009 - 2010 the population is close to 60 million, and with 61 per cent of that population being a population that can work, and it is know according to the relevant statistics that were brought out that just over 30 million are really working people.

Among those people who can work, over three million are migrant workers [who] have gone and are working in other countries, in that [population of migrants] just about 700,000 have gone and are working legally, said a responsible person from the Ministry of Labour.

Therefore, advertisements for work opportunities will be placed in 77 labour offices across Myanmar and it will be possible to apply for work in those offices, said Director U Chit Shaing of the Ministry of Labour.
