The first Bhikkunis

This text has been taken from chapter 30 of The Illustrated History of Buddhism published by the YMBC in Yangon. The text recounts the origins of the Order of Bhikkunis. Although the book provides an English translation, it is not quite literal. So, I've included my own version here. The photo below accompanies the text and shows the soon-to-be-Bhikkunis waiting at the gates of the Vesali Monastery.


The text is as follows:

ဗုဒ္ဓမြတ်စွာသည် ကပိလဝတ်ပြည် ‌‌နီဂြောဓာရုံကျောင်းတိုက်၌ သီတင်းသုံးတော်မူစဉ် မိထွေးတော် ဂေါတမီသည် သာကီဝင်မျိုး မင်းကတော် ငါးရာ‌‌နှင့်အတူ ဘုရားအထံတော်သို့ လာ၍ မာတုဂါမတို့အား ဘိက္ခု‌‌နီပြုလုပ်ခွင့်ပေးပါရ‌‌န် တောင်ပ‌‌န်လေသည်။ ထိုအခါ ဗုဒ္ဓမြတ်စွာသည် "မတော်ဘူ ဂေါတမီ၊ သာသ‌‌နာတော်၌ မာတုဂါမများ၏ ရဟ‌‌န်းပြုခြင်းကိုသင် မ‌‌နှစ်သက်ပါ‌‌နှင့်" ဟု ပယ်ရှားတော်မူသဖြင့် စိတ်မချမ်းမသားရရှာလေသည်။

ထို့‌‌နောက် ဗုဓ္ဒမြတ်စွာသည် ဝေသာလီပြည်၌ သီတင်းသုံးတော်မူစဉ် သာကီဝင်မင်းကတော် ငါးရာ‌‌နှင့်အတူ မိမိတို့ဘာသာ ဆံပင်ရိတ်၍ ဘိက္ခု‌‌နီအဝတ်ကို ဆင်လျက် ဘုရားရှင်ထံ လိုက်ကြပြ‌‌န်ရာ ကျောင်းတိုက်တွင်းသို့ မဝင်ဝံ့သောကြောင့် တံခါးပေါက်၌ ရပ်‌‌နေကြလေသည်။ ထိုအခါ အရှင်အာ‌‌န‌‌န္ဒာမြင်၍ ဘုရားထံသွားပြီးလျှင် မာတုဂါမများအား ဘိက္ခု‌‌နီပြုလုပ်ခွင့် ပေးပါရ‌‌န် အတ‌‌န်တ‌‌န်တော‌‌င်းပ‌‌န်မှ အခွင့်ရသဖြင့် ဘိက္ခု‌‌နီသာသ‌‌‌‌နာ ပေါ်လာလေသည်။

My translation:

While the noble Buddha was residing in Banyan Park Monastery, [his] aunt Gautami together with 500 royal women of the Sakya clan came to the Lord [Buddha] and requested for women to be given permission to ordain as Bhikkunis. At that time, the noble Buddha [said] "[It's] not proper Gautami. You should not want the ordination of women in the Order." As a result of being rejected and with a saddened heart she went away.

After that, while the noble Buddha was residing in Vesali, [Gautami] together with 500 royal Sakya women cut of their hair and putting on Bhikkuni robes [and] returned to the Lord [Buddha]. Because [they] did not date enter the monastery, they stood in the entrance way. At that time, Ashin Ananda saw [them] and went to the Lord [Buddha], [and] only when [Ananda] had repeatedly asked that permission be granted for the ordination of women, permission was received, resulting in the emergence of the Order of Bhikkunis.
