The history of Thamanya Hill

This short text has been taken from the Illustrated Biography of Thamanya Sayadaw (အဘိဓအဂ္ဂမဟာ သဒ္ဓမ္မဇောတိက ဘဒ္ဒန္တဝိနယ သာမညတောင် ဆရာတော်ဘုရားကြီး ပုံပြဘဝဖြစ်စဉ်), which was released in 2003 around the time of the Sayadaw’s death. The cover is shown below.


This passage (p.64-65) relates the ancient history of two pagodas that the Sayadaw found atop Thamanya Hill when he first ascended the hill with two local novices in the year 1342 Myanmar era (1980 CE).

ဤရှေးဟောင်းစေတိနှစ်ဆူ၏ မူလကောင်းမှုတော်ရှင် ဘုရားဒါယိကာမှာ
ပုဂံသက္ကရာဇ် ၃၉၀/၄၀၀ တစ်ဝိုက်က ပုဂံစစ်သည်များ၏ တိုက်ခိုက်မှုကြောင့်
မနုဟာမင်း၏ သုဝဏ္ဏဘူမိ သထုံပြည်ပျက်သဖြင့် ကိုယ်လွတ် ရုန်း၍ တိမ်းရောင်ခဲ့ရသော မုတ္တမ မိဖုရားဖြစ်၏
မုတ္တမမီဖုရားသည် ကော့ဂွ‌‌န်းဂူတွင်ပု‌‌န်းအောင်း ‌‌နေရာမှ လုံခြုံမှု ကို စိတ်မချသဖြင့် အရှေ့ဘက်ကမ်းဖြတ်ကူး၍

မုတ္တမသို့ပြ‌‌န်ရောက်‌‌နိုင်ရ‌‌န် ဆုတောင်းပတ္တ‌‌နာပြုလျက်စေထိထော် ‌‌နှစ်ဆူ၏ ဘွဲ့ကို မြတ်စော‌‌ညီ‌‌နောင်ဟု သမုတ်၍ အလံဘိသိတ်ခံယူလေသည်။

My translation:

[About] the Lady benefactor for the original meritorious deed of [establishing] these two ancient pagodas.

In the period 390/400 of the Bagan era, as a result of the destruction of King Manuha's nation of Suvannabhumi Thaton from the fighting of Bagan soldiers, the escape and evasion of the Queen of Mottama took place.

As the Queen of Mottama was not at ease with [her] security, [she] crossed from [her] location to the far bank of the [Salween] river in order to hide in Kawgone Cave.

While setting up camp at the base of "Daymehsaw" (Rice Seed Mountain)—so called by the native Mons because of [its] similarity to a large mound of rice seeds—at the summit [she] established two pagodas and worshiped.

While praying to be able to return to Mottama, [she] ‌designated the two pagodas to be named "The Noble Holy Brothers" and they were consecrated with a flag.
