Ngaba (16)



This translation of Maung Htin's Ngaba covers the text on page 18, as shown in the scanned image below. The first sentence begins on the preceeding page with the words "ယခုမူ သည်စကား".

Translation:

Now, because of these words "Nibana is within arms reach" he would have to dig and descend headfirst to the nethermost purgatory.

"I have already come close to the teaching of Sakka, [We] will be able to see the thunderbolts of Lord Sakka who identifies the most inappropriate person and the most appropriate person."

Like that, while grumbling Ngaba breathed a deep sigh. Mi Paw put her right hand on Ngaba's chest.  In one way Ngaba was worried that Mi Paw would be scared, and in one way he wanted his mind to be at ease and be looked at in support of these issues, and without resisting he took hold of Mi Paw's hand. As for in his heart was in it.

The gentle relieving breeze, while inserting its head into Mi Paw and Ngaba's chests made a musical sound.  In Ngaba and Mi Paw's minds, While abandoning the great big world that was burning hot and looking forward with peace and happiness to the entrance of the door to Nibana in this world that was full and complete they deceived themselves.

However, so as to be able to remember that the two of them together were still caught in a vicious circle in this great big world a sound of "ohn ohn" that was called from the stretch of forest to one side reminded them. As the sounds came from beyond the stretch of forest it was not very distinct.

While Mi Paw was saying "Right here, listen. What sounds is that? I don't know." she stood up with a shout and tied her sarong tightly.

The sound was submerged in the howl of a dog, the sound of a startled crow, the of a waking duck and the sounds of chickens. When it came back now and then, it was hard and deep.

Husband and wife listened attentively. At that time they heard a cough coming from from Haury's hut. Myat Hmwe and Tha Ee got up from the bed. And Mini called out and asked "What is it mother?" from inside the room. As for Mi Paw, she worried that the children would be startled and she at once picked up her little son in her arms and went to bed.

The sound was the yelling of competing sounds of distant groups of people.  Mini said, "Ha... haw... father, mother! I hear the sound of swearing."

"Ha... I don't think that it's swearing. Listen," said Myat Hmwe who while holding up her little pointer finger and talking listened attentively.  The sound became distinct.

The loud sound of people proclaiming "Thakin Myo Hay, our Burmese revolution has been sucessful," pulled loose from the root the great big world that was Ngaba's paddy field.

In Ngaba's mind he was hurt as if rammed by a boat carrying 500 full [baskets] of Ko Tha Gaung's rice.

After those sounds were gone in about one moment beyond the stretch of countryside at the entrance of the water canal from the side of the Chinese store sounds could suddenly again be heard.

When it could be heard a little bit, fires were glowing bright and growing.  Seeing the haystacks burning, it was not that there was nothing very strange about that fire for rural men and women.

However, when that fire light was irradescent and reflected in the sky all the people looking while lamenting with their hearts going "pho pho" concluded that it was no ordinary haystack fire.

However, the two of them together behind Ngaba's hut could still not see the fire light from the direction of the big river and they called out with a only a lament.  And having seen [the scene], in their minds they worried and Ngaba, Myat Hmwe and Tha Ee while groaning "At once difficulties are coming," tears fell down.  As for Haury, he cried out "Elder brother, elder brother all is finished."

The whole sky roaring on fire stood up and blazed. All the people in Tha Ee, Myat Hmwe and Ngaba's hut woke up.  And the children were startled and cried in a shrill voice.
